Once again we celebrated anti-bullying week in November. We reminded each other of our definition of bullying ‘STOP’ (Several Times on Purpose) and added this year’s message ‘Safer Together’. A whole range of activities took place in classes and assemblies during the week. Mrs Higgerson and Miss Russell put a great deal of work into co-ordinating the activities for the week and this is greatly appreciated.
This academic year Miss Wood has introduced the Wirral Civic Award scheme to interested children in year 5. The children are working on awards in five areas:
- Good Citizenship
- Self Reliance
- Personal Progress in Physical Activities
- Service to Others
- Wise Use of Leisure
I would like to thank Miss Wood for her commitment and enthusiasm for this scheme. The children are gaining a lot by participating.
Christmas was, as usual, a very busy and happy time in school. We all went to St Nicholas’ church for a Christmas assembly which was led by Jeff Staples. It is lovely to be able to visit and enjoy such a beautiful building.
The KS1 children presented their nativity play ‘Jesus Christmas Party’. The young performers did really well in this amusing and thought provoking play. I would like to thank the KS1 team of staff for all the planning and preparation that made this such a lovely event.
Our choir and orchestra performed at a Christmas Musical evening. This was an informal occasion which was very much enjoyed and well supported by parents and children. I would like to thank Miss Griffith, Mrs Hynes and Mrs Hazlehurst for all the work that went into making such a successful evening. The peripatetic music teachers helped individuals and small groups to prepare their performances and Mrs Charlesworth also attended the concert.
The new children in Poppy class put on their own Christmas performance for their mums and dads. This was a lovely occasion which was enjoyed by all. Mr Plews comes in regularly to help with music lessons in Poppy class and he played the piano for the performance. Thank-you to all in the Poppy team.
Since the Autumn term we have been working in partnership with a local company called Tafelmusik to provide KS1 music workshops for groups of children after school. Since January we have been able to provide individual piano lessons and also group or individual guitar lessons each Monday after school and into the evening. The response from parents and children has been great.
On the 6th March we celebrated World Book Day. The children and some staff came to school dressed as characters from their favourite books. Miss Russell organised a book swap session when the children could bring a book they had finished with and swap it with a friend.
Extra curricular sporting activities in the last term have included; netball kwik cricket, tennis, gymnastics, football, judo and multi skills as well as horse riding and swimming. Mrs Hazlehurst and Miss Fitzpatrick have a key role in organising and co-ordinating these clubs and events. With the expert guidance of a parent Mrs Stalker our Gymnastics team recently came third in a Wirral schools competition.
In addition to the sporting clubs mentioned above we have also provided after school cookery, dance and music sessions as well as weekly choir and orchestra practices. This involves a lot of work which is much appreciated. Teachers and teaching assistants stay after school to supervise children at these clubs. I would like to thank the staff concerned for their extra commitment.
