3.)Homework
We set homework to reinforce and extend work carried out in school. By developing good homework habits we believe children will improve their skills of independent learning and be better prepared for secondary school requirements.
Homework Timetable
Monday 20 minutes reading
Tuesday Literacy and Numeracy homework to be handed into teachers.
Wednesday 20 minutes reading
Thursday Literacy and Numeracy homework set by teacher
Weekly spelling test
Friday 20 minutes reading
Homework Books
Your child will have individual Literacy and Numeracy homework books. Spellings are given out on photocopied sheets.
In addition your child maybe asked to prepare a mini talk about any interesting books they have read recently. Talks are delivered either in assemblies or class lessons.
4) Organisation of Teaching Groups
Children will be taught in special teaching groups for Literacy, Numeracy and Science this year. The sets are arranged in the following way:
Y5 Literacy Mr Jones
Mr Chesterman
Y6 Literacy Miss Russell
Miss Wood
Y5 Numeracy Mr Jones
Miss Russell
Y6 Numeracy Mr Chesterman
Miss Wood
Y5 Science Mr Jones
Mr Chesterman
Y6 Science Mr Jones
Mr Chesterman
After half termly assessments, movement of children to different sets can sometimes take place. A member of staff will always contact you to discuss this matter in advance of any changes.
5) Targets
Each term we will be working on individual and group target with your child in Literacy and Numeracy. Teachers and children will be working together to set realistic, but challenging targets in these two subject areas. Evaluation of these targets will take place on a regular basis.
6) SAT’s
Year 6 children will be preparing for their end of Key Stage assessments this year. If possible we would be grateful it you could avoid booking any annual holidays after the Easter break until the SATs have been completed during the month of May. Children who miss important revision and test technique sessions may be at a disadvantage when sitting the tests.
The Year 5’s will be completing their optional SATs at the same time so we would again be grateful if annual holidays could be avoided during the same period of time.
7) Residential Trip
All Year 6 children will be invited on a residential trip in the Summer term. In previous years the children have really looked forward to their break at an educational activity centre. Further information will be sent out in October.
8) Behaviour
We have been delighted with the way all the children have settled into the Year 5/6 department this term. All staff work hard with the children to encourage good behaviour founded in mutual respect.
Children are rewarded for good work and acts of kindness; either in special assemblies or with team points.
Good relationships between staff and children mean that minor incidents of poor behaviour are dealt with quickly and fairly. If necessary school will contact parents to discuss behaviour issues further and whenever possible to agree a ‘united’ approach to improving the situation.
We operate an open door policy so please contact us at any time if you have a matter you would like to discuss with us.
9) Health
As a health promoting school we encourage children to make healthy choices in their diet.
Children may bring fruit from home for morning break or can buy toast/fruit/seeds in school.
Milk can be purchased at a cost of 10p per day. Chilled water is available throughout the day.
10) Equipment
Your child will be working in different classrooms in the Year 5/6 department. To help lesson changes run smoothly children would benefit from having their own pencil case, clearly labelled complete with the equipment they would need for their daily lessons:
· Pen Ruler
· Pencil Rubber
All PE kits should be clearly marked inside and should be in a named bag.
11) Extra Curricular activities
Extra curricular clubs will take place at various times during the year. The choices include:
· Choir
· Cross country
· Handball
· Gym
· Orchestra
· Judo
· Netball
· Cookery
· Music appreciation
If you fill in a consent form requesting a place for your child at an extra curriculum club please assume that your child has been allocated a place unless you are contacted to advise you that the club has been oversubscribed.
Thank you for taking the time to read this booklet, we hope you have found it useful.
Please note there will be individual teacher/parent meetings on the week beginning 15th October 2006.
