4) Groupings
Pupils are grouped by ability for:
· Literacy
· Numeracy
· Spellings
The groups are numbered 1, 2, 3. The higher the group number, the higher the level of the work.
Numeracy
· Group 1 Miss Munnerley
· Group 2 Miss Fitzpatrick
· Group 3 Mrs Hutchinson
Literacy
· Group 1 Mrs Hutchinson
· Group 2 Miss Fitzpatrick
· Group 3 Miss Munnerley
Spellings
· Group 1 Mrs Hutchinson
· Group 2 Miss Fitzpatrick
· Group 3 Miss Munnerley
The children are assessed and placed into groups at the beginning of the year. Their placement in a group is regularly reviewed and is based on end of unit assessments and teacher assessment. Any movement usually takes place during the Autumn term and parents are consulted beforehand.
5) Targets
Each term individual targets are set in literacy and numeracy. These targets are set and evaluated in consultation with the children on a one to one basis.
6) Homework
· Spellings
Spellings to learn will be given every Friday to be learnt by the following Friday, when the children will be tested, usually within dictation. Each child will be given a home spelling book and a weekly handwriting practice sheet related to their spellings.
· Numeracy
A numeracy homework will be set on a Monday to be handed in by the following Friday.
NB: The children are encouraged to learn through understanding and only when this is established will they be taught the more traditional standard written methods. Whenever possible an example of the method to be used will be shown at the top of their homework. If your child is unsure of the method shown please encourage him/her to come back to speak to his/her numeracy teacher during the week of the homework.
- General Homework
This homework will be set on a Friday and due in by the following Friday. (This may be a research activity or an activity related to one of the curriculum areas, e.g. Literacy, Science, History, etc.)
Homework is a valuable means of consolidating the work carried on in the classroom, however it is not compulsory. Your child’s homework will be monitored and you will be informed if there are persistent gaps in their homework record.
7)
Pupils are encouraged to read as much as possible. They may choose a reading book from the graded reading trolley or a suitable book from home. This book may be taken home on a Friday but must be back in school by the following Monday as the children have daily reading sessions during registration.
8) Handwriting
This year school has adopted the ‘Cripps’ style of handwriting and this will be modelled by your child’s teacher. If your child’s handwriting is already neat, joined and legible they will be encouraged to work towards their own personal style.
9) P.E.
Pupils will have a PE lesson twice a week (please refer to the class timetable for the allocated days). Whenever possible Games based lessons will take place outside. For health and safety reasons an appropriate kit is essential. Parents will be informed if their child is regularly without a kit.
· Indoor Kit black pumps/bare feet, black/white shorts and plain white t-shirt.
· Outdoor kit The same as indoor kit but trainers may be worn. On fine, cool days jogging tops and bottoms may be needed.
10) Jewellery
Jewellery is not allowed in school apart from studs, which must either be removed or covered with plasters, brought from home, during PE lessons.
11) Swimming
Swimming is an important aspect of the PE curriculum and the year 3/4 band will go to the swimming baths at some point during the summer term.
12) Art/DT
The children are encouraged to bring an old shirt into school to protect their clothing during these lessons.
13) Optional SATs - May
During this week (we will let you know the date as soon as possible) the children will be assessed in Numeracy and Literacy using important SAT materials and we would therefore be grateful if you could avoid booking a family holiday during this time.
14) Rewards & Sanctions
· Good work and kindness awards are presented in a weekly assembly.
· Team points are awarded for exceptional effort and good work.
· Termly homework certificates are awarded for consistently good homework records.
· Stickers are given for good behaviour and each child has a chart which when completed is rewarded with a prize.
15) Discipline Issues
Most discipline issues are dealt with by the class teacher, if these issues are persistent they will be referred to the bandleader and then ultimately the Headteacher. Our policy is to inform and work in partnership with parents when a child’s behaviour is of some concern.
16) Health Promoting School
Greenleas is a health promoting school and the children are encouraged to eat healthily during the school day. The following are suitable snacks and are on sale at break time:
· Milk 10p
· Seeds 20p
· Fruit 10p
· Toast 20p
We rely upon your support to provide your child with a healthy lunch box.
Chilled water is located in numerous areas around the school, which the children have access to. Water bottles are not allowed on their desks, but they are able to help themselves to water provided it is not during the teacher input part of the lesson.
